Our Oreo Creation and other Baking Problems

I never thought it would be so difficult to bake something in Mexico, but it has become such a hassle, that I only have done it like 3 times. This past weekend we became desperate to make dessert together, so I had to search high and low for a recipe that would do. Let me just tell you a few reasons why it is so hard to think of anything to make...
  • Chocolate Chips are not sold in major grocery stores anywhere in Tehuacán.
  • Peanut Butter costs about $6-8 for an 8 oz. can
  • Powdered Sugar and Brown Sugar do not exist unless you own a fancy restaurant, and even they ship it in from far away.
  • Ovens are gas only here, which makes it HIGHLY possible to burn everything really fast.
  • Nobody even owns a baking sheet, muffin pan, or cake pan
  • You can only make so many good things in a microwave
  • Cocoa Powder? What is that?
  • Canned Frosting....like cream to whip? No...not that. Mexicans aren't even aware of the wonderfullness of frosting.
  • Do you know what 350 degrees fahrenheit is in celsius?? Nope...Umm.....let me google that.
  • The concept of baking at all is pretty foreign. "What is baking?"

As you can see, that is why we have to resort to things like this.

Ok, I know it doesn't look to awesome, but really it was pretty good. So here is our Mexican Grocery store friendly recipe for Oreo Marshmallow Treats.

Oreo Bars

1-2 Bags of Marshmallows (About 40)
1 lb or 4 sleeves of Oreos
1 stick of butter

Crush up the oreos to small crumbs, set aside.
Melt the butter and marshmallows on the stove until gooey and liquid like. Pour in the oreo crumbs and stir.
Pour dough into a greased (or ungreased) pan (any shape, really who cares?). Let cool and then cut up to eat.

These are very similar to rice krispy treats, yum yummy!
