Thank goodness it was Friday, because..drumroll please.....We had no school!!! That's right, we had the day off, so we packed our bags and headed out for a vacation to Cuetzalan. Pronounced Kwet-salon, it's a small town nestled high up in the mountains and is about a 5 and a half hour bus ride from Tehuacán. We left home around 7 in the morning and arrived in Cuetzalan around 2 after taking two different buses.
We were oh so excited, because we heard it was a magical place, and for the most part, we heard right. On Friday afternoon we spent most of our time tootin' around town, staring at the gorgeous views.
Because Cuetzalan sits in a mountain, the entire town is either up or down. Nothing else. So already we were workin' out our buns and thighs. haha! Our next stop was to see the pyramid ruins, which we had to take a combi (like an oversized taxi) to. The combi only had to go four miles, but it took almost 25 minutes, because the roads are all made of cobblestone, and like I said before the roads are either up or down, nothing else, and they are windy and skinny. We finally got to the pyramids, which weren't as cool as others, but thats ok.
That night, we checked into a hotel for our first night, since we couldn't get reservations at the hostel yet, and then we walked around the city. We found this little restaurant, had jumbo tortas and teeny weeny tostadas..go figure, the prices were the same. The other awesome part was the street food. I have been dying to eat an elote, because Justen has insisted I eat one or a hundred. I had my first elote and it was quite the experience. I loved it!! An elote is corn on a stick, spread with mayonnaise, lime juice, cheese and then chile. I hope those are in heaven.
We did some shopping, and enjoyed people watching until around 8 p.m. when the entire city died. Literally, there was no one out but the guerras (white girls) on a Friday night. Crazy. So we went to sleep.
Our Friday was awesome, and we had only started our vacation!! Viva Cuetzalan!
